Brand Muse is how Netflix makes sense of that drift: a set of portraits built from global research, in-home ethnographies, and stories written with cultural journalist Carrie Battan.

My job was to give those stories a face. Reading each one, I developed the concept for every character: who they are, what they surround themselves with, and the small details that say it without words. Then I art directed eight portraits in the spirit of 17th-century fine art, but with modern details hiding in plain sight.

Each piece was generated with AI, then edited, collaged, and hand-painted until it stopped looking generated and started looking hung.

Muse Profile

Mary, a 28-year-old event producer in London, is usually a reality-TV junkie who uses television as an escape. She’s a social butterfly, though, and she was recently inspired to watch the Netflix documentary The Perfect Neighbor—a film constructed entirely of police body-cam footage to piece together the story of a murder in Florida—when people around her started buzzing about it.
